Ujung Kulon

Ujung Kulon National Park

Located in Banten Province. One of the largest remaining lowland rainforest on Java (another is Halimun Salak National Park).

Ujung Kulon is the last sanctuary of endangered one-horned rhino (rhinoceros sondaicus). A real-life jurassic wildlife, wild animals grazing in the morning, huge bats flying in the afternoon, storks, deers, wild boars, python on the tree branch, monkeys, colourful birds flying from on tree to another as if guiding you while canoeing at Cigenter River.

At Peucang Island awaits white pristine sandy beaches and sometimes a baby shark would swim into shallow waters. Yet it is safe to float on your back in the warm blue water and just gaze to the blue sky and catch a sight of an eagle eyeing for prey from high above.

But where is the rhino ? Deep in the mainland of the park, rhinos are not easy to be seen. They say rhinos are shy animals, nevertheless rangers would climb the nearest tree once they are approached by one. It takes a lot of "good" luck and time to catch a glimpse of this big cute animal usually cooling themselves in the water of small rivers. Who knows, you might be the lucky one to see a rhino which is not impossible, since they usually "hang around" the Cigenter River sometimes.

Another wild inhabitant is crocodile, which I've never seen one when I was there, but according to rangers-talk some of them sighted crocodile in some swampy areas.

Long time ago Ujung Kulon was inhabited, not many inhabitants though, and almost the entire coastal area was wiped out by the great tsunami caused by the eruption of the mount Krakatau.

Accommodation

Peucang Island and Handeuleum Island offers lodges, basic, but quite comfortable. You'll soon forget it is not a five star accommodation as soon as you hear the sounds of nightlife, namely cicadas, owls, nocturnal birds, and sometimes screech sounds of monkeys in the distance.

Camping (tent)

Camping is also possible in some designated ares (camping grounds), which is quite comfortable and exciting.

Trekking

For die-hard adventurers they would hike for 2 or 3 days, and overnight in tent near the (rangers) shelters along the trail.

3 Days 2 Nights

A 3D2N experience is a combination of light trekking and island hopping by wooden "fishermen" motorized boat, overnight at Handeuleum Island and/or Peucang Island.
